Did you miss yesterday’s mini tutorial?? Here it is if so, I showed how to add hem bands to your Bonny Leggings.
The Bonny leggings have two waistband options included- no elastic and a fold over yoga waistband. For some kids (and maybe mamas in the Peg Legs) elastic is needed. Usually if your daughter has a little baby belly (or post mama belly) your waistband will roll down and not stay put. On the other end if your daughter is very thin, she may have a problem holding it up. OR maybe you just ran our of your good lycra/spandex fabric and don’t know what to do! THIS tutorial is for you!!
I’ll start with an enclosed waistband. That means the elastic is slipped inside the waistband. Don’t worry, no threading of elastic needed! (The crowd goes WILD!)
If you are doing the enclosed elastic waistband, you will cut and put your pattern together exactly per the tutorial. You will also need to cut a piece of elastic the same WIDTH as your waistband. For my daughter’s size (5 width/6 length) I cut a piece of 1.25″ elastic- 1″ would work too- 18.5″ long.
Go ahead and follow the pattern, stop when you get to the last step of attaching the waistband. Make sure when you fold your waistband in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, you give it a good press with your iron. Go ahead and quarter you waistband and your leggings. Now. overlap your elastic ends by 1/2″ and zig zag a few times to hold in place.
Simply slip your elastic inside your waistband. The elastic should be sandwiched between the folded sides of you waistband. Slide your elastic as close to the folded edge of the waistband as possible to make the next step easier.
Follow tutorial to attach waistband, making sure you don’t catch the elastic while stitching. TADA!!! (Ohhh you see a sneak for another mini tutorial?!?)
On to the exposed elastic waistband! For some reason, I have A LOT of waistband elastic. I believe it went on sale at Joanns and I grabbed, ohhhh every color they had, because at the time it seemed like a great idea! ( I mean.. here it is again, ON SALE!) I never used it though. There it sat with the other elastic, all sad and colorful. NO more, I will use this super soft elastic finally!
I will be able to use up my stash quick and it will make really fun little circle skirt Bonny leggings too! Do not cut a waistband piece, simply cut a piece of waistband elastic the same width as the waistband piece. For my daughter, size 5 width/6 length I cut a piece 18.5″ long.
Fold the elastic in half, with right sides together, stitch short ends, creating a loop.
Press the seam toward one side. I just used my hand. Then stitch in place to hold elastic flat, so it’s not uncomfortable on your daughter’s back. You can stitch a rectangle shape or I just used a zig zag stitch.
Now quarter your elastic, like you would the waistband and with RIGHT sides together and with a 1/4″ seam allowance stitch the waistband to leggings. I disengage my knife on the serger so I don’t accidentally cut some elastic off.
Flip your elastic up and you’re done!! Now you can use up all that elastic you’ve been hoarding….. I mean, saving for the perfect project 😉
