The Barbie headband from the Best Friends Collection is the cutest addition to any of the Best Friends outfits, even for Dolly!
Materials needed:
- Barbie Headband
- Fabric scarps – you can use knit, wovens, felt, whatever you’d like!
- Fold over elastic (FOE)
- Felt – 1/2 sheet (3-4″ square/flower or one larger piece if using multiple flowers)
- Hot glue glun
- Sewing machine + basic sewing supplies
Directions:
I found the best pattern piece to use for the Dolly version if you want a less dramatic headband is a single “Flower A”; however, if you like a larger headband, you can use any of the 3 pattern pieces! The Bitty Twin Dolly on the left (below) has only Flower A, the Wellie Wisher Dolly in the middle has two Flower A flowers, and the 18″ Dolly has a Flower B and Flower C.Β You can certainly use all three flowers if you prefer, or you could also trim down the paper pattern pieces if you’d like several smaller flowers. In addition to the fabric flower pieces, you will want to cut out one matching felt circle piece for each flower, OR you an follow the alternative directions below if using several flowers.
After cutting your flower pieces, follow the tutorial for the flower construction.
Once your flowers are constructed, cut a piece of FOE to fit your dolly’s head. Stitch the ends together to create a loop. I did a few rows of zig zag stitches, but you can also use a stretch stitch or a lightning stitch if you prefer. I tried the loop on dolly’s head just to make sure I hadn’t made it too small!
If you don’t have FOE, you can also create a band using knit fabric – I would recommend using a strip 1.5″ wide x length needed for dolly’s head. Fold the long way with right sides together, then sew a simple tube by sewing or serging the long edge together using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Turn using your favorite turning tool, press, and then stitch the ends together to create a loop (your raw edges will be covered so you don’t need to worry about those).
Next, hot glue the wrong side of the FOE/band to the felt circle piece. Glue your flower directly to the band AND the felt.
Alternatively, if you are using multiple flowers, you can glue the back of the flowers to the right side of the FOE/band, apply glue to the flower backs, and attach to a larger piece of felt. Once the glue has cooled, trim the excess felt off the back of the flowers.
I love how sweet these headbands look with any of our Dolly collection, and especially with the rest of the Best Friends Collection! Grab your dolly patterns here:

Sewing for a little one that would prefer FOE to the wider knit band the Barbie headband tutorial calls for? You can use the same directions above to create one for her!
