Yay! Its Day 4 of our Christmas freebies!!!! Do you have little ones who love to help you in the kitchen? My kids love baking, especially during the Holidays! They also love felt play food, but WOW! It can be expensive!!! Today’s tutorial is a DIY felt bake set that your tiny bakers will be sure to love. It comes with dough, gingerbread cookie, and piping bag pieces. Let them help you design their cookies for a fun activity you can do together!
You can download your felt bake set pattern here in our freebies section, and then come back here for the tutorial!
SUPPLIES:
- 3-4 sheets 9″x 12″ felt for the dough- I prefer 2mm thickness. (You will need 2 sheets for the dough and other sheets for cookies. Buy more if you want to make more.)
- 1 sheet of 9″x12″ felt for the piping bag- 1mm thickness works best!
- Scrap of felt for the piping bag tip
- Embellishments for cookies- ric rac, buttons, pom poms, embroidery floss, you could even use HTV (heat transfer vinyl) or puffy paint!
- High loft quilting batting
- Polyfill stuffing
- String, yarn or baker’s twine (for piping bag)
- Point former or chopstick, rubber band, needle and thread
LET’S GET STARTED!
1/4″ seam allowances included.
Step 1: PREPPING
Go grab the pattern HERE! The pattern is 100% free, but you do need to add it to your cart and check out. Then, it will always be available to download from your account. The pattern is a no trim pattern; if you need help putting the pattern together, pop over to the faqs and troubleshooting page or ask in our Facebook group .
Print and assemble the pattern. Cut out the pattern pieces. Pattern layout shown below.
You will need to cut 2 dough pieces out of the main felt and 1 dough piece out of the batting. Cut your batting piece 1/4″ smaller than the main dough pieces.
Step 2: MAKING THE DOUGH
Place your gingerbread pattern piece on your top dough piece. Trace shape. You can choose how many cookie cutouts you want in your dough. Sandwich your batting in between the two main dough pieces.
Pin around the edges of your dough. I also like to pin inside the gingerbread man to keep the layers from shifting. Stitch around the edge of the dough with 1/4″ seam allowance. Stitch around the outside of the gingerbread man. Your needle should be 1/8″ outside of your tracing markings.
Cut on your tracing markings. I found it easiest to use an exact-o knife. If you are very careful, you can use the gingerbread cutouts for your cookies!! If you are wild with the scissors, like me, you will want to use your pattern piece to make new cookies. 😉
Step 3: GINGERBREAD COOKIE
If you were careful with your cutting, you can use the two gingerbread cutouts from your dough. If not, use the pattern piece to cut 2 gingerbread men out of your main felt. You can choose to use quilting batting (cut 1 gingerbread man out of batting) or polyfill to stuff the cookie. You can partially “decorate” your cookie at this time. I used ric rac for icing around the arms and legs. If you are using buttons, I suggest waiting until the end to add them.
Decorating tip: Use caution with vinyl (research the proper settings for felt) and heat sealing ribbon or ric rac. You don’t want to burn your cookies! 😉
Stitch the opening closed.
Hand stitch any buttons or other embellishments, as desired.
Step 4: PIPING BAG
Use the pattern pieces to cut out 1 main bag and 1 piping tip. Find the centers of each and lay the tip on top of the bag. Edge stitch the tip to the bag.
Fold the bag in half with right sides together. Pin and stitch along the straight edge with 1/4″ seam allowance. Run a gathering stitch around the opening of the bag. You want your line of stitching about 1″ down from the opening. Turn bag right side out. Use a point former to push the tip out the whole way. Pull the bobbin threads slightly. Begin stuffing bag with Polyfill until your bag is stuffed to desired fullness.
Pull bobbin threads tightly to close up the bag. Grab a rubber band or hair tie to temporarily hold the bag. Remove basting threads.
Tie some baker’s twine, ribbon, yarn or twine around the top in a double knot. Remove rubber band.
Enjoy watching your little ones play with their felt bake set!
I love your site Where do I even begin to make so many cute things for my great-granddaughter (2 yo)
One question about the gingerbread man ornament: what are the tiny clips you used to hold the pieces together to sew? Looks like you sewed right over them I’ve been sewing, crafting and quilting many years and never seen them before Thanks, keep up your designing
They are sewing clips, but you can’t sew over them. You use them in place of pins 🙂
The tutorial for the felt bake set does not show up when I click on the link.

It looks like the felt bake set tutorial got deleted somehow… The pattern just links to this page, but there are no instructions. I made this before and I wanted to make more, but I can’t remember how I made the cookie dough fluffy. Please help, thank you!!!!
