Today we’re going to be working on pockets and skirt construction. Kids LOVE pockets!! Last year, my daughter wore her Katelyn to Pre-School at least once a week because she could take her imaginary friend, “Snowflake” to school in her pocket! How adorable, right? Anyway, kids really do love them.
The Katelyn pattern has directions for adorable front pockets. If you are wanting to embellish them, do so before you stitch them together! That way all of the ends of your trim, lace, ric rac, etc. will be enclosed.
If you decided to skip pockets altogether, or finished your front pockets, follow the tutorial to complete skirt construction. If you are wanting to add inseam pockets, follow the directions below!
Inseam Pockets **KATELYN SAL EXTRA**
Did you download and cut out your FREE pocket piece yet? If not, download your inseam pocket here: KatelynJumperSALInseamPocket!
You should have 2 sets of mirror-image pockets cut out.. so, 4 pockets TOTAL!
Back Skirt + Inseam Pockets
Lay out your back top/tunic/skirt piece… for the sake of ease, I’m just going to refer to this as the skirt. 😉 Place one pocket piece, right sides together with your back skirt. Pocket should be 2″ down from the top edge.
With a 1/2″ seam allowance, stitch your pocket to the back skirt.
Clip to seam allowance above and below pocket 1/2” to seam, but not past.
Finish the seam allowance of the pocket and skirt together. Only finish between the spots where you clipped!!!
Open and press seams toward pocket. Topstitch 1/8” from seam on pocket piece.
Repeat this process on the opposite side of the back skirt piece. Your back skirt should have two pockets now. Set aside while we attach pockets to the front skirt!
Front Skirt + Inseam Pockets
Lay out your front skirt. Place one pocket piece, right sides together with your front skirt.
Flip the pocket to wrong side. I like to press here.
Topstitch 1/8″ along the pocket. Use the yellow dashed line as a guide where you will topstitch!
Repeat on the opposite side of the skirt. Your front skirt piece should have two pockets now.
Attaching Skirt Front to Skirt Back
Pull pockets out, so your skirt front is laying flat. TIP: pin down the inside on pocket so it stays flat while you are stitching skirt pieces together! You can see where I pinned my topstitching down with the dashed, yellow circles below.
With right sides together, line up side seams of front and back skirt with pockets out, pin. Stitch down and around pocket. Watch out for pins if you pinned down your top-stitched pocket! Finish seam with serger or zig-zag stitch.
Flip skirt right sides out and tuck pockets inside. Topstitch down side seam 1/8” from seam above and below pockets. I used a tight zig zag stitch to give the pockets some more stability.
You did it! I know construction on these is a little fussy, and you may have to take it slow and read the directions a few times. Don’t hesitate to ask questions in the Made for Mermaids Patterns Group page on Facebook! Hopefully you have beautifully finished inseam pockets to hold your little one’s sweet hands, treasures, or imaginary friends! 😉
