This week we released two new patterns- the girls Quinn and Mama Quinn.
Mama Quinn is a slip style top or dress. I have been seeing slip dresses EVERY where and really wanted to recreate the look. I saw them on my instagram, pinterest, popping up in my Facebook feed, they are every where! Every store I went in had the same silhouette; they had no darts or closures, just loose and simple. We worked hard during testing and through different versions of the pattern getting the arm curve correct and flattering with no dart! Some inspiration below (click photo for source and more photos.)
Now on to the options! Mama Quinn comes in our full women’s size range.
It includes several back and length options.
It is designed for lightweight woven fabric with nice drape, however you most certainly could make in a drapey knit as some testers did! It is listed as an intermediate patterns because of the suggested fabric, the actual sewing is VERY quick and easy. However these fabrics are a little more difficult to work with from cutting to finishing. Don’t let that scare you though- find some red tag rayon challis or poly chiffon and try it 🙂 Or go for an ITY or rayon knit first go. It is a loose fit with minimal ease through the hips. A light woven is going to drape to your body beautifully without needing to nip in at the waist. If you use a medium weight woven or quilting cotton you’re going to loose that drape and get a boxier fit that probably feels more like pjs. The v neck is very flattering and can easily be altered to be a higher or lower cut (tip in pattern). It is finished with either a facing or you can fully line. If you choose to fully line you can easily mix the different lengths for uneven hem or a flounce look, ex- cut cropped length for main pieces and maxi for lining pieces. OR cut you main top length a few inches shorter than your lining top length. If you want to do this I suggest using french seams so your lining seams are enclosed.
Cropped length goes perfect with high waist jeans, skirts, or even layer the cropped length over dress length for a flounce look!
Top length is perfect for everyday wear with shorts or layer a blazer or kimono over for work.
On to dress, which is what I made the most of! The dress length hits above the knee and is so perfect for hot summer. Layer a cardi over for work and then slip on some heels for night!
Maxi length is also a summer must have. Your legs are covered but the dress is so light, you aren’t too hot. Perfect combo!
Now what about a nighie or pj version?? Megan T. shortened her dress length by 2″.
There are 4 different back options. You can choose a double v back. I and other testers found we could wear a normal bra with this option. Megan T. also used 3/4″ trim above on her nightie and that worked great for wearing a normal bra too.
Center straps with or without elastic in the back.
Criss cross straps with or without elastic in the back.
Shoulder tie straps with or without elastic in back.
