Day 5 of our 12 Days of Christmas Freebies is here! The Mason Jar Pincushion makes a perfect gift for any seamstress, or a practical addition to your own sewing space! Pieces are included for both wide mouth and regular mouth mason jars. Add trim and embellishments to the ring or keep it simple; use it store buttons or spare spools of thread. These are the perfect way to use up scraps!
You can download the Mason Jar Pincushion in the Freebie section of the website HERE!
- Fabric: Any scrap will work – woven, knit, etc. Quilting cotton is my favorite and the easiest to work with.
- Glue gun/glue sticks
- Mason Jar with lid and ring
- Poly Fill
Let’s Get Started!
Step 1: Cut your scrap fabric from pattern piece based on size of mason jar.
Step 2: Place a generous amount of hot glue on the top of the lid. (Tip: You want to work quickly between this step and the next step so that your glue doesn’t set up too soon)
Step 3: Take a handful of poly fill, work it into a tight ball with your hand, and then press it down into the hot glue.
Step 4: With wrong side of fabric against poly fill, place hot glue along a small section of the bottom of the lid. Wrap fabric around to the bottom of the lid so it is secured in place by the hot glue.
TIP: When you are wrapping the fabric around the lid, push the poly fill away from the edge of the lid slightly (toward the center), so that you are still able to secure the ring on the jar.
Continue Step 4, wrapping fabric around to bottom of lid and securing in place with hot glue in small sections, until the entire circle is secure.
Don’t worry if it looks a little lumpy when you turn it over after you’ve finished – it will all smooth out one you place it on top of your mason jar and secure the ring around it.
Step 5: Place lid on mason jar and tighten the ring around the lid. (Note: the ring will not tighten all the way because of the extra fabric and poly fill, but it should tighten enough that the lid isn’t loose.)
So cute and practical!! This is another great scrap buster (or, if you’re like me, you just had to go buy this perfect fabric especially for the pincushion 😉 ). Don’t forget to join the Made for Mermaids Pattern Group on Facebook to see more sneak peeks of our 12 Days of Christmas Freebies!
