Today’s FREEBIE is a fun scrap buster that is perfect for stocking stuffers, craft fairs, and kids and adults alike… A playing card holder! Add your favorite card game, and you have a wonderful gift.
SUPPLIES:
- 1/4 yard of quilting cotton
- 1/4 yard of light-weight fusible interfacing/fusible fleece
- 2 CDs or DVDs – I used 2 very old printer software CDs… Yay repurposing!!
- 2 Buttons- approximately 1″ wide. They should be about the same size with the same number of holes.
- Heavy duty thread OR embroidery floss (if you plan on hand sewing)
LET’S GET STARTED!
1/2″ seam allowances included.
Step 1: PREPPING
Go grab the pattern here! The pattern is 100% free, but you do need to add it to your cart and checkout. Then, it will always be available to download from your account. The pattern is a no trim pattern; if you need help putting the pattern together, pop over to the faqs and troubleshooting page or ask in our Facebook group .
Print and assemble the pattern. There is one page to print out. Pattern layout below:
Step 2: CUTTING
Cut 2 main, 2 interfacing/fusible fleece. Note- some testers cut cardboard from the interfacing piece instead of using CDs.
Step 3: FUSIBLE FLEECE
Center fusible fleece on the wrong side of one main fabric piece. Press in place. Repeat on the other piece.
Step 4: GATHERING
Run a gathering stitch 1/4″ away from the circle edge. Place one CD in the center of the circle on the wrong side of fabric. Gently pull the bobbin threads until the fabric is tightly wrapped around the CD. Tie gathering threads into a knot several times to hold the fabric in place. NOTE: It is important to use heavy duty thread if you are using your machine for this step. Regular weight thread will break if you pull too tightly. You can also hand sew a gathering stitch with embroidery floss to achieve the same result. TIP: for extra hold, you may use some hot glue to help secure the fabric to the CD.
Repeat with other piece and CD.
Step 5: BUTTONS
Starting at the back/inside of one piece, push your needle and thread through the center of the CD and secure one button in place on the right side of fabric.
Once the first button is secured, push the needle and thread through the back side of the other piece to the front. Add your button. Make sure both of your pieces are aligned and sew them together through both buttons until the card holder is tight.
Tie off your button thread and snip
There you have it! Place your playing cards in between both discs and have fun!

Since we’ve recently moved, there are no extra CDs floating around. Any suggestions for alternatives?

I’ve seen people glue a few pieces of cardboard together and cut to CD size.

I have made these for my preschool Sunday school kids and some of their older siblings. The kids love them and I have gotten positive feedback from parents. I used fabric scraps from other projects and a few fat quarters. I’m now working on some for senior care facilities.

Bravo for repurposing old CDs into this great craft! I made these for my granddaughters and used a Mermaid print fabric. Thank you for sharing this fun pattern.
