It’s Day 3 of our Christmas Freebies, yay! Today, we have a gift that is PERFECT for book lovers. Ribbon or Fabric Bookmarks! They are so fast to make and take scraps of ribbon/fabric. Slip it onto a book, add a gift card to your favorite bookstore, and you have an awesome teacher’s gift! I love all the different fabrics/trims you can use to really personalize these bookmarks. And if your child(ren) is/are anything like mine, they LOVE to pick out those novelty buttons EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. they go with you to Hobby Lobby. Well, now you have the perfect project to use those on 🙂 . This is also a great project to have your child(ren) help with, since it requires very little sewing! Now, let’s get started!
Supplies:
*Ribbon/Trim- The length of your ribbon will really vary from book to book, so I suggest measuring your book to see what length you want, but 16″-18″ is a good average length. I suggest using ribbon that is at least 1″ wide.
*Elastic Hair Ties
* Buttons
Step 1: We need to enclose one raw edge of the ribbon. Fold ribbon towards wrong side by 1/4″. Fold again 1/4″, enclosing the raw edge. Pin in place. Tip: You could heat seal this edge of your ribbon instead of enclosing the raw edge if you prefer!
Edge stitch closed.
Step 2: Take your hair tie and lay it on top of the RAW EDGE of your ribbon.
Fold the raw edge of the ribbon in 1/4″.
Fold the folded edge over 1/2″, enclosing the raw edge of the ribbon. Pin in place. The hair tie will be enclosed in between.
Edge stitch closed.
Step 3: Yay, we are ALMOST DONE! Grab the opposite end of your ribbon. This edge should already be enclosed or heat sealed. We are going to sew our button onto this edge! Place your button on top of this edge and stitch in place.
You are all done! Loop the elastic around the button and you now have a super cute bookmark!
Tip: We had some awesome testers try out fabric bookmarks! If making one out of fabric, you will cut 1 piece of fabric that is 3″ in width and anywhere from 16″-18″ in length. Fold your fabric strip in half width wise, with right sides together. Sew up the long raw edge and one short raw edge using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Clip the corner, and turn right side out. Press and top stitch if desired. You will then be ready to follow along at step 2!
Check out all of our adorable tester photos below.
