Hey everyone! Melissa here with one last little bit of Holiday sewing inspiration for our “Sew, What Do I Wear? Holiday Edition” tour! The holidays have completely crept up on me this year and my head is already spinning with to-do lists, shopping lists, Sub For Santa, school programs, work parties, dance programs, etc, etc, etc. It’s never ending! There are so many events and gatherings during this wonderful season that I really wanted to have a versatile outfit that can work for many different situations.
Enter my slightly modified Mama Mya dress in this buttery-soft double brushed poly/spandex from So Sew English. I basically never want to take it off (and probably won’t)! I love how incredibly comfortable this dress is – I feel like I’m running around town in my PJ’s! But, of course, I look much more put together than that. Win/win!
During this ever busy holiday season, I really wanted a nice outfit that I can throw on quickly, be comfortable enough to handle my “mom duties” with ease, be modest enough that I’m not stressing about wardrobe malfunctions, and be stylish enough that I feel dressed-up for parties and events! This dress fits the bill to a tee! To achieve this look, first I printed the Mama Mya pattern in my size, plus one size up. I wanted it to be extra flowy towards the bottom, so I started with my usual size at the bust and graded out to 1 size larger towards the bottom. I then chopped the pattern a few inches above the bottom hem, added in 4″ to the length, reattached the bottom, and smoothed the curve of the side seam. With an 18-month baby crawling around my legs 24/7, I wanted my dress to hit just below the knee for a little extra wardrobe security there 😉
I’ve been on a hemming strike lately, so I added bands to my 3/4 sleeves rather than hemming them. I took about 1″ off of the sleeve length before adding the band, and I really like where the sleeve hits. I debated for a bit between a regular neckband and the cowl, and as you can see – the cowl won in the end. I think it takes the look of the dress up a notch, which is perfect when I need something to look a little dressier. I was a little short on the burgundy floral, but I like how the olive cowl accents the dress and adds a little interest! I’m loving all of the gorgeous jewel tones that are on trend this winter, and I happen to be slightly obsessed with florals. Fabric selection for this project was easy as pie!
Mama Mya is really a go-to pattern in my wardrobe. The fit is so flattering, and the pattern is loaded with options to create so many different looks! Not to mention that it sews up incredibly quickly! I assembled my pattern, made my modifications, cut fabric, and had it sewn up all during 1 of my toddler’s naptimes! Ok.. so it was an unusually long nap, but it WAS one nap! Pinky swear! One naptime, and I have an outfit that I can dress up or down for so many occasions during this insanely busy time of year!
Last, but certainly not least, all it took to complete my outfit was a pair of booties and nothing more! That’s a major bonus in my book, and you busy mamas and boss-babes will know what I mean. When time is so limited and you’re running from one place to the next, it doesn’t get any better than a complete look that goes together this quickly!
