Yay, we’ve made it! Today is our last sewing day for the Shelly sew-a-long! Our only task today is attaching our leg elastic. Late to join the party? No worries at all – we have a few days to play catch up.
Day 6:
Today we’re simply attaching our leg elastic. You’ll first create a loop with each piece of elastic by overlapping the short edges by 1/4″. Be sure not to get your elastic twisted!
Attach your elastic to the LINING side of your leg opening. First, pin or clip the elastic to the suit. Then, attach using a stretch stitch, zigzag stitch, or serger. Remember that if you use your serger, do not cut any elastic off.
Once you’ve attached your elastic, fold the elastic in toward the lining side. Then, topstitch using a zigzag stitch or a coverstitch.
That’s it – your Shelly swimsuit is complete!
Don’t forget:
- Make sure you are taking an accurate and consistent seam allowance; seam allowance is already included on all pattern pieces. It *does* vary throughout this pattern
- DO NOT stretch the elastic along the front of the leg opening; only stretch along the back
- When topstitching, pull the elastic taut

If you have questions about attaching your leg elastic, you are always welcome to post in our SAL group so we can help you! Be sure to check in each day during the SAL, and look for daily posts to enter our giveaways. We can’t wait to see what you create this week!
