Today I will be sharing how to create a hem band on your leggings. I’ll be honest, when I’m in a rush (always) I don’t want want to take the time to change my thread on my coverstitch. The hem on my daughter or son’s leggings are so tiny, it doesn’t seem worth the effort to change the thread. So, a lot of times I’ll add a simple band on the leggings instead! Very easy and quick quick quick. Plus it can be really cute to add a contrasting fabric! WIN all the way around 😉

First your inseam will be 1/2″ longer than stated in the tutorial, so you can trim the hem 1/2″ if you want. I don’t… again #lazygirl problems.

Cut your pieces per pattern. Lay them flat and measure the hem. Subtract 1″ from measurement and cut 2 band pieces using that measurement for the width x 2″. So if your hem measures 12.5″ you will cut 2 pieces 2″ x 11.5″.

Now take a band piece and press it in half lengthwise, WRONG sides together. SAM_0635
Find center of hem by fold in half widthwise. Pin center. Find the center of the band  the same way, by folding in half widthwise.

With right sides and raw edges together, match center band to center hem. Then pin each end of band to edge of hem. You band will stretch slightly to hem.

Stitch together, stretching band to fit hem. Press seam toward leggings and top stitch if desired.

Continue to follow instructions per pattern! Tada! Now you can also so sew the hem band in the round, like you would a neck or arm band so you have no exposed seam at the inseam. I have shown both boy shorts here, but you can do this on any length option! I just have been making A LOT of boy shorts to go under dresses!
