Today’s the final sewing day of our Oaklynn Sew-a-long! Some of you may be finished up already, some of you may need to hem, and some of you might be using today to catch up; regardless, photo submission for today is totally optional 🙂
Are you struggling to get a clean finish on your hem? Whether you’re using a sewing machine or a cover stitch, if you are having a difficult time, wash away hem tape might be a great option for you to try! You should be able to find it at most craft/fabric stores, but it’s also available online. You may also see it as “wonder tape”, but definitely make sure it states “wash away”.
Trying to memory press your bottom or sleeve hems and your fabric just won’t hold a press? Try using spray starch – you can purchase it, or there are several great non-toxic recipes online that you could use. You can do an easy “sewing spray starch” using your favorite search engine, and many options will pop up for you. Remember not to put the starch *inside* your iron, though 🙂
Want to mimic the look over a coverstitch, but don’t have a new machine in your budget right now? Lots of people in our mermaid community get a similar look by using a twin needle on their regular sewing machine! You can also experiment with decorative stitching, stretch lace trim used as a hem, lettuce hems, and more! Searching our FB group will gives you loads of inspiration, and lots of helpful tips and advice.
If you have questions about hemming, or any of our previous steps, you are always welcome to post in our SAL group so we can help you! Be sure to check in each day during the SAL, and look for daily posts to enter our giveaways. We can’t wait to see what you create this week!
