We’re more than halfway through our Shelly sew-a-long! Day 4 brings us a few steps – we’ll tackle the enclosed crotch seam, straps, and adding the neckline elastic. The most challenging part of today will probably be turning your straps! I promise, though, it is all within your skill set 🙂
Day 4:
We have a few steps to knock out today! First is enclosing the crotch seam. This burrito roll is a bit easier than the roll we did to enclose our bodice side seams. Keep in mind that you will need to ease the crotch seams together very slightly; match the notches and the edges together first, and then ease as needed.
Next, construct your straps.
NOTE: You can use a zig zag stitch, stretch stitch, or your serger to attach elastic. If you use your serger, do not cut any elastic off; you will need to have your knife engaged, though, to trim 1/4″ seam allowance.
Turning the straps right side out can be a bit tedious, but just take your time. If you need to take a break while turning them, just put a clip wherever your safety pin is; you can put the clip right on top of the pin (on the outside of the fabric), and it will keep it from sliding all around.
Finally, we will attach our neckline elastic. I added a few extra stitches where the strap and the bodice connect, because I know my daughter is rough on straps. Feel free to do the same! Just remember to use a stretch stitch.
Don’t forget:
- Make sure you are taking an accurate and consistent seam allowance; seam allowance is already included on all pattern pieces. It *does* vary throughout this pattern
- Remove basting stitches when you finish up
- For reference, I’m sewing a youth version with optional flutters and a solid back. In the videos this week, the lemon fabric will be my main fabric, and the floral fabric will be my lining.
