Our Men’s Gable boxer briefs have continued to be a big hit with our mermaid community! We’ve had LOTS of questions come up, so we’ve compiled a list of Gable FAQ for you to refer back to. AND! We’ve also extended the sizing to XXS to 6XL, and added a youth Gable boxer brief pattern. WOOO!
Does this come in kids’ sizes?
Never say never! The Youth Gable pattern is now officially available! 🙂
What sizes is the Men’s Gable available in now? What about Youth Gables?
What else changed in the update?
We’ve added projector files, metric measurements, rectangular pieces (plus cut chart), added more measurements to the sizing chart for a great fit, added fitting info and tips for adjusting rise, adjusting front piece, grading for the thigh, and TWO full sew-through videos from cutting to finishing! The fit itself did NOT change.
Do I need to buy the Men’s Gables again to receive the updates?
Nope! Just re-download the pattern from the website, and you will have the updates! Do make sure you delete the old files from your computer, though, to help eliminate any confusion.
Is there a women’s version?
Not at this time, but if you search our FB group, we’ve had several members modify the Gables for women and/or LGBTQIA+ mermaids that are looking for a similar style.
Will these work for potty training? Will they fit over diapers/pull ups?
Yes, and sure! If you want to be able to wear them over diapers/pull ups, you will want to take measurements over the diaper/pull up since they are already a snug fit.
Where can I get brief waistband elastic?
Surge Fabrics, Joann’s, Hobby Lobby, Sew Sassy Fabrics, Amazon, Etsy, or Libelle Sewing (Canada) are a few great options. Be sure to use the “search” feature in our Facebook group, too, as this question has popped up a lot already!
Can I use the same elastic for Gable/Lana/Greta?
Is there a back seam?
Are there any hacks?
What’s the best fabric for these?
Don’t forget, all our patterns include a list of recommended fabrics in the supply list! Rayon spandex (it does grow some, but some of our boxer-wearers have preferred that fabric!), bamboo knit, cotton lycra, jersey knit, athletic knit, circular knit, supplex, etc. Do you/does your wearer have a favorite brand of RTW? You can scope out the tags in those, too, to get an idea of what fabric your wearer will prefer.
Ok, but where should I order/buy my fabric from?
You can find fabric for these most anywhere! Our team, testers, and several in the Mermaid community have ordered from: Sincerely Rylee Fabrics, Surge Fabric Shop, Bow Button Fabrics, Knitpop, Sly Fox Fabrics, Phee Fabrics, and Libelle Sewing (Canada)
Can I use doodles? What about woven?
Doodles will not have enough recovery, and woven will not have enough stretch.
Will you be releasing a boxer pattern?
Not in the near future, but never say never.
Where do I take the waist measurement?
Use preferred waist for these.
Is there a video tutorial?
YES! There are two videos included in the tutorial showing the different options sewn. It will walk you through cutting out to finishing the boxer briefs. Plus we also have our Sew-a-long. If there is a particular step you are still stuck on, post in our Facebook group so we can help you out!
What is the hammock for?
To create separation between body parts, for those that prefer that style.
Why do the pieces look so big?
The paper pattern pieces are often deceiving since seam allowances aren’t taken out yet! Don’t panic yet that they won’t fit 😉
Is double brushed poly okay to use?
The polyester content makes it far less breathable. so although it will “work” as far as stretch goes, it will depend on individual preference.
Do I need to grade for the waist?
You probably don’t need to, since the waistband hits just above the hips! You can use the waistband from the larger size if preferred, though.
What height are these drafted for?
5’9″, but if you prefer the fit of RTW, you may not need to add/subtract height. It will depend on the wearer’s preference. Don’t worry, there is fitting info with a graphic in the tutorial!
Does it include a fly?
Yes, instructions for the functional fly are included as an option.
We hope that helps answer some of your questions about our Gable patterns! Happy sewing!
