Listen, all this talk about sweatshirts already this week must have worked because I was downright COLD tonight, for the first time in months. Ok, so maybe it was just a coincidence, but I am here for it all the same!! We’re heading in to Day 2 of our Hudson Hoodie sew-a-long. Don’t have your copies yet? Grab them over here!
Today’s steps are not nearly as intimidating as they might seem when you first look at the pattern! We will construct our pocket, as well as stitch up our shoulder seams.
If you are omitting the pocket, you will simply stitch the side panels to the center panel with 1/2″ seam allowance. I made a pocketless one for my father-in-law last year, and I love how it turned out! The seams of the panels still add just enough visual interest, even without the pocket.
If you are including the pocket, be sure that you have your pocket pieces marked. It’s easy to get them turned around, but there is a specific top and bottom! I like to put a clip at the top of my pieces to help me keep track. The pocket construction essentially has three steps – attaching first pocket piece, attaching second pocket piece, then enclosing the raw edges within the center seams. NOTE: I highly suggest stitching the center seams with your regular sewing machine, and then finishing the edges with a serger if desired. I know that’s an added step, but it makes closing up the pocket edges much easier! And, on the off chance you accidentally catch some of your center panel in the seam, it’s an easy fix!
Don’t forget:
- Mark your pocket pieces and center panel piece using the paper pattern piece as a guide
- Place a pin or clip at the top of your pocket pieces so you don’t get the top/bottom switched!
- Only stitch between the markings when you are attaching the first pocket piece
- Attach your pocket pieces with a SEWING MACHINE 🙂 This will give you MUCH greater control and precision
- Do not clip beyond your seam allowance
- Pay attention to seam allowances for the pocket construction as they do vary!
