Our newest Barbelle Collection pattern is here, and I’m so excited to introduce Rumi! The Rumi Pattern is an oversized knit raglan sweatshirt designed to be comfy, cool, and completely customizable. With options like an oversized crossover hood or cozy cowl, crop or sweatshirt length, three sleeve styles (tank, classic long sleeve, or balloon sleeve), and multiple back options including solid, color block, or lace-up, Rumi is packed with ways to make it your own. While it’s perfect for layering over your favorite workout set, it’s just as easy to style for everyday wear.

Neckband Hack:
Love Rumi but not a fan of hoods or cowls? It’s easy to add a neckband!
To start, cut all your Rumi pieces except the hood/cowl. Follow the tutorial to construct everything except the neckline. For the neckband, make sure you are using a fabric with stretch and recovery. Now measure the width of the neckline. I find it easiest to fold it in half and measure. Calculate the neckband using the formula below. For Rumi I prefer a wider neckband, so I recommend a 2.5″ wide neckband for youth and 3″ wide for adults.
Measured neck opening x 0.85 + 1″ seam allowance
(note- not all fabric is created equal- you may need more or less ease depending on the fabric you choose and your main body)
In this example of a size blue, my calculation was: 26″ x 0.85 +1.0″ = 23 (ish), so I cut a neckband 3″ x 23″.
Quarter the neckline and the neckband. Place your neckband to the right side of the neck opening, making sure your seam is at the back. Sew/serge using 1/2″ seam allowance. Press with steam. Optionally, topstitch neckline.
All done! Enjoy your Rumi with a neckband.
Happy Sewing- Michelle

Fabric + Notions
Rumi Body is drafted for heavy to medium-weight knits with good recovery and some structure. Sweatshirt Fleece, Polar Tech Fleeces, Thick French Terry, Fleece, etc. Fabrics with or without stretch will work. Something with a softer drape and more stretch will feel looser/longer than the intended fit compared to a thicker sweatshirt fleece with minimal stretch.
Rumi Color Block Back Piece- Get creative! This will work with a variety of fabrics, from sheer mesh, lace, or any other unique fabric you can think of, for a fun look. You can also stick to a different color of your main fabric.
You may also need:
- Grommets – for lace-up and drawstring options. 7mm is recommended, but other sizes will work as well; you may just need to adjust the hems. Alternatively, you can use button holes. Fusible interfacing (for grommets/button holes).
- Optional Drawstring- braided cord, lace, chain, ribbon, poly/nylon cord, cotton cord, elasticated cord, grosgrain/herringbone tape, cotton lycra tubes, etc.
- Optional- 1/2″ wonder under or knit hem tape
We hope you love the Rumi pattern, no matter who you sew for! We can’t wait to see how you style yours.
