Hey there Mermaids! You asked, and we listened! We get questions all the time in the Facebook group on how to get started sewing with knit fabrics. Everything from which needles to use, to fabric types. So we put together a helpful how-to in PDF form for all of you – Sewing With Knits 101.
Download your free copy here.
What’s included in the PDF? We’ve covered all the basics:
- Needle types
- Appropriate stitches (no, you don’t need a serger to sew with knits, although it does make it easier sometimes!)
- Common fabric types, and the garments they’re best used for
- A full page of troubleshooting tips (plus a bonus video for help telling the right side of the fabric from the wrong side, and how to find your grainline on your fabric to match to the pattern piece!)
- A stretch test printable – no more guessing how much stretch your fabric has. You could even take it with you when you go fabric shopping, so you can tell if the fabric you’re loving will have enough stretch for your project!
Another question that pops up frequently in the group is recommendations for fabric shops. So the M4M put our heads together to give you some of the ones we buy from frequently!
- Sincerely Rylee Fabrics
- Pretty Posh Prints
- Mily Mae Fabrics
- Raspberry Creek Fabrics
- Purpleseamstress Fabric
- Knitpop
- Vinegar and Honey Co.
- Sly Fox Fabrics
- Surge Fabric Shop
- So Sew English Fabrics
- Hawthorne Threads
Canadian ladies (and maybe gentlemen 😉 ), don’t worry! We’ve got you covered with a few Canadian shops as well:
*We left solely custom fabric shops off of these lists, just because it would take 3 more pages to list all of our favorite customs groups! <3
We hope this PDF is helpful for you, and makes sewing with knits less intimidating. If you have any more questions, please join us in our Facebook group, we’d love to interact with you! And don’t forget to share what you’re creating with us, either on Facebook or on Instagram @madeformermaids using the hashtag #madeformermaids!

One Canadian fabric shop that should definitely be on this list is Blackbird Fabrics in BC. The quality is outstanding and, Caroline, the owner is so helpful to anyone who has questions before and after buying. They are at https://www.blackbirdfabrics.com/
