We are SO excited to have you join us for Week 1 of our Spring 2018 Mini Capsule Contest, sponsored by Sincerely Rylee Fabrics. If you haven’t already done your planning and fabric shopping, don’t panic!! We’ll be working on our capsules all month long, so you’ll have plenty of time to catch up and be eligible for prizes 🙂 Be sure to check out our planning guide here if you’re just getting started.
Week 1: Tops!
This week, our focus is on tops. Full disclosure – I made my own capsule last week so I could start working on capsules for both of my kids this week. I only have one pattern to print and assemble (the Dylan tee for my son!), since the rest of the tops I chose are patterns I’m already currently using. 🙂 If you’re in the same boat, you’re certainly welcome to get a head start on fabric cutting, assembling, etc. Here’s a quick look at what I’m working on this week. Even though the Rowan Raglan hoodie is technically a layering piece for my son, I’m going to knock it out this week since I’ll already have that pattern out!
Wondering if you should size up or not for kids’ capsules? I know since some of you are still staring at piles of snow, and kids grow so darn fast, it can be challenging to sew in advance. For my daughter, I’m making all of her tops in dress length, so that even with a growth spurt she’ll be able to wear them as tunics for a bit longer. She has been growing seemingly non stop! She measures a 1 width/3 length, so I’ll mash the 1 width with the 3 dress length for tops. My son is at the top of size 5 for length, so I’ll be making a 6 length for him to get a bit more wear out of them.
This Week’s Schedule –
Week 1 (March 5) – Tops –
- Monday – print & assemble patterns
- Tuesday – cut fabric
- Wednesday & Thursday – sew
- Friday – sew/hem
- Saturday & Sunday – catch up
Coming up:
Week 2 (March 12) – Bottoms // Week 3 (March 19) – Layers // Week 4 (March 26) – Outfits/putting it all together
Prizes
All winners will be selected randomly.
Weeks 1 – 3: each week, one winner will receive a Patterns for Pirates pattern of their choice, and one winner will receive a Made for Mermaids pattern of their choice. Drawings will be done on Sundays (March 11th, 18th, and 25th).
To enter: look for the “official” weekly thread in the Made for Mermaids Facebook group, and post a picture of your capsule progress each Sunday by 5 pm EST.
Having trouble finding the posts? On a computer, locate the search bar on the left hand side and type in “#sewminicapsule”. It should pull up the most recent posts using that hashtag.
On a mobile device? Use the same options, but your screen may look more like this, with the search bar at the top:
Final Week Prizes – One winner will receive a $20 Patterns for Pirates store credit; one winner will receive a $20 Made for Mermaids store credit; one winner will receive a hand selected VIBE box from Sincerely Rylee Fabrics. Not sure what a VIBE box is? Darcey will curate fabrics to coordinate perfectly with your spring capsule! Be sure to check out her shop for other gorgeous must haves (but remember to leave all the good stuff for me, haha!).
To be eligible for the final week prizes, look for the “official” final week thread in the Made for Mermaids FB group, and post a picture of your completed 9 piece capsule by midnight EST on March 31st. While I do love a good collage, it really doesn’t have to be in any specific format – even a single picture of all 9 pieces on hangers is just fine 🙂
FAQ
Do mash ups count? As long as the mash up is M4M/P4P, absolutely!
Do all of my pieces have to match? Ideally, yes. In reality, no. 🙂 As long as you make 9 pieces that you love, that’s good enough for us!
Can I use a ready-to-wear item as one of my nine pieces? For this contest, no. But it’s definitely a smart idea to make a capsule that works with RTW pieces already in your closet!
Is there a coupon code? No specific code, but our bundle discounts are always available!
Am I only eligible if I use fabric from Sincerely Rylee? You can use fabric from anywhere, including your stash and upcycled items.
How much fabric is too much fabric to order from Sincerely Rylee Fabrics? No such thing as too much fabric. It’s just a myth, probably started by one of our husbands.

We can’t wait to see what you make this month! If you’re still stuck on ideas, search “capsule”, “mini capsule”, etc in the Facebook group (or even on Pinterest!) to get some great inspiration. Of course, you can always post in the group for feedback as well. 🙂
