I can’t believe we are already on Day 5 of our Christmas freebies!!!! We get asked all the time for a women’s apron, since we have two child aprons, so we put together a simple half apron for all of you!
You can download your apron pattern here in our freebies section, and then come back here for the tutorial!
SUPPLIES:
- 1 yd any woven (quilting cotton, linen, chambray, etc.)
- Favorite turning tool
- Embellishments- buttons, pom poms, trim, extra fabric for ruffle, etc.
LET’S GET STARTED!
1/2″ seam allowances included unless otherwise noted.
Step 1: PREPPING
Go grab the pattern HERE! The pattern is 100% free, but you do need to add it to your cart and check out. Then, it will always be available to download from your account. The pattern is a no trim pattern; if you need help putting the pattern together, pop over to the faqs and troubleshooting page or ask in our Facebook group .
Print and assemble the pattern. Cut out the pattern pieces. Pattern layout shown below.
Sizes are determined by hip measurements:
- Small (Grey-Purple): 29″-34″
- Medium (Blue-Green): 34″-42″
- Large (Yellow-Red): 40″-53″
You will need to cut 1 main on fold, 2 waistbands on fold, 4 ties on fold. You may choose to make a plain front apron without pockets, or cut 1 or 2 pockets. TIP: Cut your pockets on the bias for a fun and different look! Place a pin at the top of the main piece so you don’t get the sides mixed up.
Step 2: MAIN BODY
Finish sides and bottom of main with serger or zig-zag stitch. Press each side in toward wrong side 1/4″, then another 1/4″. Edgestitch in place.
Step 3: POCKETS (Skip to Step 4 if not adding pockets)
Press main in half widthwise to find center. Open back up and press one finished edge to center to find quarter point. Repeat on other side if adding a second pocket. We will use these creases for the pocket placement in a later step.
Finish all raw edges of the pocket with a serger or zig-zag stitch. Press pocket in half widthwise to find center. Repeat for second pocket, if adding.
Press sides of pocket in toward wrong side 1/4″. Press bottom edge of pocket in toward wrong side 1/4″. Finally, press top edge of pocket toward wrong side 1/4″, then another 1/4″. Edgestitch top in place.
Trim seam allowance and clip corners.
Using your favorite turning tool, turn right side out and press. Topstitch, if desired. Repeat process with other tie pieces.
Step 5: WAISTBAND
Press one long edge of one waistband piece to wrong side 1/2″. This will be your BACK waistband. Set aside.
Lay front waistband out flat, right side up. Place raw edge of tie along raw, short edge of waistband, with bottom edge of tie 1.5″ above the bottom, raw edge of the waistband. BASTE in place. Repeat on opposite side for second tie.
Place BACK waistband on top of front waistband, right sides together, with memory press of back waistband at the bottom. Stitch along both short edge and top edge of waistband with memory press unfolded. The tie will be sandwiched between the front and back waistbands. Be sure you do not catch your ties as your are stitching! Clip corners.
Clip corners and press waistband right side out.
Lay main apron out flat, right side up. Place waistband on top, raw edges aligned, with right side of FRONT waistband matching right side of main apron. Stitch waistband to main, making sure not to catch the back waistband as you are stitching.
Press waistband and seam allowance up away from main body. Refold memory press on back waistband and topstitch waistband in place, enclosing all raw edges.
Step 6: HEMMING
Press main apron 1″ toward wrong side. Edgestitch hem in place.
Congratulations! You’re finished! Now go enjoy some holiday baking with friends or family! <3 Tip: Have fun with it! Add some trip to the pockets, waistband, or hem; or add a ruffle for a little extra flair!
