On the second day of Christmas, Made for Mermaids gave to me… a Fabric Key Fob for my key(s)! These are SO quick to sew up and perfect for using up small scraps. You can grab a pack of swivel hooks and make loads of these for gifting OR for Holiday markets if you sell at those! Quilting cotton works perfectly for these so you can use so many fun prints and easily personalize them with your favorite sports or school team colors, patterns, favorite colors, novelty prints, etc.
SUPPLIES:
- Woven fabric – quilting cotton is a great option for these!
- Optional- batting to make your key fob padded/have more weight.
- 3/4″-1″ swivel snap hook or similar (I only had 1/2″ and made it work.)
LET’S GET STARTED!
Seam allowances are included on pattern pieces.
Step 1: PREPPING
Go grab the pattern here! The pattern is 100% free, but you do need to add it to your cart and checkout. Then, it will always be available to download from your account. The pattern is a no-trim pattern; if you need help putting the pattern together, pop over to the faqs and troubleshooting page or ask in our Facebook group .
Print and assemble the pattern. Alternatively, you can use the projector file if you’re using a projector. Pattern layout below:
Step 2: CUTTING
All measurements are in inches.
Solid Option:
- Cut 1 main fabric (3 x 10.25), cut 1 optional batting (.75 x 10.25)
Colorblocked Option:
- Cut 1 color block option upper (3 x 6.25), cut 1 color block option lower (3 x 4.5), cut 1 optional batting (.75 x 10.25)
Step 3: SEWING
For the color blocked option, pin or clip your lower piece and upper piece with right sides together, matching up the short raw edges.
Stitch together using a 1/4″ seam allowance, using a regular straight stitch.
Press the seam allowance open toward the wrong sides.
NOTE: The remaining steps apply to the color blocked option AND the solid option!
Fold in half lengthwise with wrong sides together. Create a memory press.
Open your fabric back up.
Fold your raw edges toward the center seam, along the memory press you just created.
Optional: Add batting to the center of the key fob. If you opt to include this, follow the instructions included with your batting. Be sure that the batting does not overlap any of your memory presses; it should fit snugly between two memory press “creases.”
Before stitching, slide your fabric through the swivel snap hook.
Slide the hook toward the middle of the fabric. With the right sides together, pin or clip raw shorts edges together.
Stitch together with 1/4″ seam allowance.
Trim the batting from the seam allowance to reduce bulk. Finger press the seam allowance open toward wrong sides.
Fold back toward the center, with wrong sides together, using your previous memory press lines.
Edge stitch along both long edges.
Press the fob in half. Pin or clip fob together. Stitch across the fob, as close to the clip as possible, to secure the clip in place.
That’s it! Enjoy your new key fobs – these are a great scrap buster, and easy to personalize with favorite colors, patterns, sports teams, etc.
