Welcome to Week 4 of our Spring 2018 Mini Capsule Contest, sponsored by Sincerely Rylee Fabrics. If you’re just joining us, you can see the planning post here, Week 1 here, Week 2 here, and Week 3 here. Didn’t join us this time , or still having a hard time putting capsules together? I have a solids/basics capsule coming SOON that may be more your style 🙂 Stay tuned!
Weeks 1-3: Recap!
I am loving seeing all of your capsules come together! Go check out our Facebook group and search #sewminicapsule to check out the winners from previous weeks, and to get some inspiration if you’d like to join us for the last two weeks!
Week 4: Putting it all together
Ok, I lied last week when I said layers were my favorite because truthfully, putting the whole capsule together is my favorite part. I have two kids’ capsules to share with you later this week, but thought I would share my own today!
Tops
From left to right, I used a modified Mama Catherine , P4P Timeless Tunic, P4P Brunch Blouse ,and a modified Megan.
For Mama Catherine, I adjusted the armscye to make it sleeveless and added bands. You could also do binding if you prefer that look. Your best option for getting a good armscye is to mash with a tank pattern. Then, measure the armscye and calculate your band/binding. I measured mine at 85% + seam allowance, but depending on your fabric you may need anywhere from 80-95%.
If you’re feeling wild, you can blouse either the Timeless Tunic or the Brunch Blouse to make them more “tunic” length. I wear lots of dresses during the summer, but I also like the option of wearing the dresses as a blouse tucked into a skirt, or worn as a tunic with SOS pants/Pegs. The only tricky part about this option is making sure the back especially is smooth and neat, and if you’re wearing it with a skirt, that the dress isn’t hanging out of the bottom. 🙂
I added a lot of fun little details to the Megan top I made but the basic pattern did not change. I actually wanted it longer, but made it work with 1 yard of fabric. Eventually I’ll do a tutorial post for the details I added, but you can see I omitted the band, and then added some ruffles and ties to the shoulder/neckline area. In the pictures where you see a very closed/high neck I’ve just tied the ties tighter!
Bottoms
For bottoms, I included P4P Pegs, P4P SOS Skinnies, and a gathered Mama Joy Skirt. I’m fairly “boring” with bottoms – I don’t wear many patterned or funky colored leggings. I do try to add some color with skirts, though, because I know I will wear those! For the Mama Joy Skirt, I used a cotton spandex so it’s a little poofier than I would normally prefer, but it is definitely comfortable so it’ll still see plenty of wear.
Layers
I LOVE this violet Mama Isabel. I made the ties a little longer for a slightly different look (although you can see I didn’t check placement before these pictures – whoops!). I also made a neutral Mama Darcey. I have SO many floral/patterned layers that I was definitely due for a good, neutral layer. It’s nice to have some staple pieces that work across seasons, although a seasonal mini capsule is a great way to add some fresh colors and patterns to your wardrobe!
This Week’s Schedule –
Week 4 (March 26) – Outfits/putting it all together Contest ends at midnight EST on March 31st.
Prizes
All winners will be selected randomly.
Weeks 1 – 3: each week, one winner will receive a Patterns for Pirates pattern of their choice, and one winner will receive a Made for Mermaids pattern of their choice. Drawings will be done on Sundays (March 11th, 18th, and 25th).
To enter: look for the “official” weekly thread in the Made for Mermaids Facebook group, and post a picture of your capsule progress each Sunday by 5 pm EST.
Having trouble finding the posts? On a computer, locate the search bar on the left hand side and type in “#sewminicapsule”. It should pull up the most recent posts using that hashtag.
On a mobile device? Use the same options, but your screen may look more like this, with the search bar at the top:
Final Week Prizes – One winner will receive a $20 Patterns for Pirates store credit; one winner will receive a $20 Made for Mermaids store credit; one winner will receive a hand selected VIBE box from Sincerely Rylee Fabrics. Not sure what a VIBE box is? Darcey will curate fabrics to coordinate perfectly with your spring capsule! Be sure to check out her shop for other gorgeous must haves (but remember to leave all the good stuff for me, haha!).
To be eligible for the final week prizes, look for the “official” final week thread in the Made for Mermaids FB group, and post a picture of your completed 9 piece capsule by midnight EST on March 31st. While I do love a good collage, it really doesn’t have to be in any specific format – even a single picture of all 9 pieces on hangers is just fine 🙂
FAQ
Do mash ups count? As long as the mash up is M4M/P4P, absolutely!
Do all of my pieces have to match? Ideally, yes. In reality, no. 🙂 As long as you make 9 pieces that you love, that’s good enough for us!
Can I use a ready-to-wear item as one of my nine pieces? For this contest, no. But it’s definitely a smart idea to make a capsule that works with RTW pieces already in your closet!
Is there a coupon code? No specific code, but our bundle discounts are always available!
Am I only eligible if I use fabric from Sincerely Rylee? You can use fabric from anywhere, including your stash and upcycled items.
Do I have to post each week to be eligible? Nope!
How much fabric is too much fabric to order from Sincerely Rylee Fabrics? No such thing as too much fabric. It’s just a myth, probably started by one of our husbands.

We can’t wait to see your finished capsules! If you’re still stuck on ideas, search “capsule”, “mini capsule”, etc in the Facebook group (or even on Pinterest!) to get some great inspiration. Of course, you can always post in the group for feedback as well. 🙂
