On the 7th Day of Christmas, Made for Mermaids gave to me a Freebie for All the Bookworms!
Calling all readers! Today’s freebie is one that’s close to our hearts—a Kindle sleeve with a pocket! Reading is practically a way of life in our family. My husband never leaves the house without his Kindle, I’m always listening to an audiobook (on double speed, of course!), and my kids are just as hooked. Whether it’s curling up with a new novel, diving into an e-book, or flipping through an inspiring guide, we’ve always got a story in hand.
This Kindle sleeve is the perfect gift for the book lovers in your life—teachers, kids, friends, or anyone who can’t resist a good read. It’s simple to customize with your favorite fabrics, and you can take it to the next level by adding embroidery, vinyl, or a funny saying for a personal touch. Want to make it extra special? Turn it into a gift set! Include blue-light glasses, a sleek pen, a small notebook, or a thoughtful bookmark to round it out.
Ready to sew a gift that’s practical, thoughtful, and oh-so-fun?
SUPPLIES:
- Fabric – woven fabric like quilting cotton, satin, denim, etc. A variety of fabrics can be used.
- 3/8 yard main
- 3/8 yard lining
- batting or fusible fleece
- elastic or hair tie if you don’t want to use fabric loop (note you could switch this out for a snap or velcro if you have those on hand)
- 1 button
LET’S GET STARTED!
3/8″ seam allowances included
(please see note above about finished sleeve size and taking smaller seams if needed)
Step 1: PREPPING
Go grab the pattern here! The pattern is 100% free, but you do need to add it to your cart and checkout. Then, it will always be available to download from your account. The pattern is a no trim pattern; if you need help putting the pattern together, pop over to the faqs and troubleshooting page , check out the blog post here, or ask in our Facebook group .
Print and assemble the pattern. Alternatively, you can use the projector file if you’re using a projector. Pattern layout below:
Step 2: CUTTING
- All in inches.
- Cut 1 front in main, 1 in lining and 1 in batting- 5.75 x 7.75
- Cut 1 pocket in main- 5.75 x 5.125
- Cut 1 back in main, 1 lining and 1 in batting- 5.75 x 11.25
- Cut 1 pocket & loop binding- 2 x 9.75
- Baste batting/fusible fleece to the main front and back pieces. Treat as one now.
Step 3: SEWING
Press the binding piece in half, with the wrong sides together to create a center crease. Press each long edge toward the center, then press in half again.
Use the binding piece to finish the top edge of the pocket. Then trim extra and edge stitch binding piece to use as the loop OR you can use elastic as a loop- I like it about 3.5″-4″ depending on the button size. Set aside.
Place the pocket piece on the main front piece, aligning the bottom and sides. Baste in place along the side and bottom.
With the right sides together, stitch the main front and the lining front together along the top edge.
Press the seam toward the lining. Optional- trim batting from the seam allowance. Understitch on the lining side so it doesn’t peek out.
Press the lining to the wrong side.
Fold the loop binding or elastic piece in half and pin it at the center main back with right sides together. Baste in place.
With right sides together, pin main front and back together, alining the bottom edges. Place lining back on top, right sides together (front will be sandwiched between). Stitch together along all sides with 3/8″ seam allowance, leaving a 3″ opening at the top side to turn right sides out.
Press the unsewn seam 3/8″ toward the wrong side.Clip corners and trim batting from the seam to reduce bulk.
Press it right side out, pressing corners out. Topstitch around the top ‘flap’ to close the opening.
Fold the flap down and mark where to add the button. Stitch the button to the pocket only.
Tada, all done!
