SUPPLIES:
- Fabric – woven fabric like quilting cotton, broadcloth, satin, flannel, etc. A variety of fabrics can be used.
- 1 1/8 yards of fabric
- I used Pellon 76 naked flex foam to make my bow puffy. It was on sale for $1.64/yard at Joann, and you’ll need 1 1/4 of it (it’s 20″ wide).
- You could also use batting or interfacing. Depending on which you choose will result in different looks! If you don’t use anything, your bow will be more ‘floppy’.
- Thread, floral wire, or pipe cleaner to hold the bow together.
LET’S GET STARTED!
1/4″ seam allowances included
Step 1: PREPPING
Go grab the pattern here! The pattern is 100% free, but you do need to add it to your cart and checkout. Then, it will always be available to download from your account. The pattern is a no trim pattern; if you need help putting the pattern together, pop over to the faqs and troubleshooting page , check out the blog post here, or ask in our Facebook group .
Print and assemble the pattern. Alternatively, you can use the projector file if you’re using a projector OR use the measurements given below. Pattern layout below:
Step 2: CUTTING
- Cut 1 main bow 18 x 38
- Optional- Cut 1 flex foam 8.75 x 38
- Note- If you want to use interfacing or batting vs the foam, I would cut it the same size as the main bow. I thought the foam was too much doubled over.
- Cut 1 tail 18 x 44
- Optional- Cut 1 flex foam 8.75 x 44
- Note- Again, if you want to use interfacing or batting vs the foam, I would cut it the same size as the tail piece. I thought the foam was too much doubled over.
- Cut 1 center 8 x 4 (If adding foam, you may want it a little thicker 6″ or so)
- Optional: if using interfacing or batting, attach to the wrong side of the main pieces (not the foam).
Step 3: SEWING
Fold the main bow in half longways, with the right sides together. Stitch.
I like to press the seam open and toward the back.
If adding foam, I like to add it now, then turn it right sides out. I just hold on to the foam and fabric when flipping. You can also slip it inside after you turn it right side out if you find that easier.
With the right sides together, fold the bow in half widthwise. Then, stitch the short ends of the bow together. Flip the right sides out, center the seam, and set aside.
Fold the tail piece in half long ways. Optional cut ends at diagonal.
Cut foam with the same diagonal and add it on top (wrong side of fabric). I like to use a little basting spray to hold in place.
Refold the tail piece in half and stitch together all around, leaving a 5″-6″ opening in the center to flip.
Press the unsewn opening toward the wrong side 1/4″. Then clip corners and press right sides out. Optional close opening w machine or slip stitch, but you won’t see it once bow is together. Set aside.
Fold the center piece in half longways with the right sides together. Stitch. I like to press my seam open and toward the back. Then flip it right sides out.
Step 4: ASSEMBLING
To assemble, pinch the main bow in the center and use thread, wire or pipe cleaner to wrap to hold.
Fold and pinch the tail piece in half and place it on the main bow, again wrapping with the thread to hold. You can put a few hand stitches in the center to hold if you want.
Wrap the center piece around to cover the thread. Stitch or glue the center pieces together in the back. You could add a hanging loop with ribbon or extra fabric if you wanted.
