It’s the 8th day of Christmas here at Made for Mermaids and we have these beautiful felt ornaments for you today!
I adore making felt ornaments. The hand sewing is very therapeutic for me. Plus, you can work on it in car line, during your little one’s practice, or even at night watching your favorite show. Handmade ornaments hold a special place in my heart. I remember putting our great grandmother’s ornaments on the Christmas tree every year. We would always try to find our favorites, and have so much fun looking at the detail in each. Below are just a few that my mom still has on her tree every year:
These will last through the years and become a fun tradition for your family. I will be adding to this collection each year, but this year decided to start with Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, an Angel, and two Christmas stars. If you’re nervous about handing sewing, just jump right in, because no one will notice if your stitches aren’t perfect!

LET’S GET STARTED!
Step 1: PREPPING
Go grab the pattern HERE! The pattern is 100% free, but you do need to add it to your cart and check out. Then, it will always be available to download from your account. The pattern is a no trim pattern; if you need help putting the pattern together, pop over to the faqs and troubleshooting page or ask in our Facebook group .
Print and assemble the pattern. Cut out the pattern pieces. Pattern layout shown below:
The first page is to show suggested colors and how the pieces will layer. Each page is a different ornament with cutting instructions.
Layer bottom layer on base. I like using basting spray to hold in place. Stitch in place using your favorite stitch. I like using a backstitch.
Layer next layer on top and stitch in place.
Use fabric pen to copy face. Layer face on top. Note- please test your fabric marking pen on a scrap piece of felt. Learn from my sad lesson. The Cricut brand pen I used was not water soluble on the felt.
Stitch on face. You can use a french knot for the eyes OR small buttons. My favorite are small tacks found in the scrap-booking section.
Cut ribbon or twine for loop. I like to use about 5 1/2″ for my loop. Baste or tape loop in place on wrong side of ornament.
Layer back piece to front with loop in between. Blanket stitch around, leaving a small opening.
Stuff with a little polyfil and then blanket stitch closed.
Tada, complete!
Repeat the process with all pieces.
Now hang them on your tree, enjoy and admire!
