LET’S GET STARTED!
1/2″ seam allowances included.
Step 1: PREPPING
Go grab the pattern here! The pattern is 100% free, but you do need to add it to your cart and checkout. Then, it will always be available to download from your account. The pattern is a no-trim pattern; if you need help putting the pattern together, pop over to the faqs and troubleshooting page or ask in our Facebook group .
Print and assemble the pattern. Alternatively, you can use the projector file if you’re using a projector. Pattern layout below:
Standard pillowcase: 21″ x 33″
Queen pillowcase: 21″ x 37″
King pillowcase: 21″ x 43″
Body pillowcase: 21″ x 61″
Step 2: CUTTING
Cut 2 pieces on the fold in your desired size, or use the dimensions listed above. The supply list is very simple for this pattern! You’ll want two pieces for each pillow you’re making – a front and a back for each. Pieces are cut on the fold, and they will seem MUCH bigger than you think they should, but two on the fold for each pillowcase is correct. 🙂
NOTE: If you’re using a directional fabric, you’ll want to pay attention to which way it’s facing when you’re cutting your piece out. You can see how Kayla placed her pattern piece below to get her elephants facing the way she wanted.
Pin or clip along both long edges, and one short edge, with the right sides together. Using your sewing machine, stitch them together using a 1/2″ seam allowance. Finish edges with a serger, pinking shears, or similar. Be sure to leave one short edge open.
To finish the raw edge of your open side, use a serger or pinking shears, OR turn 1/4″ under toward the wrong side. Still be sure not to stitch the opening closed!
Turn the pillowcase right side out. Fold and press the open edge 3″ in toward the wrong side (inside) of the pillowcase. REALLY press to make the stitching easier. Topstitch in place using a regular straight stitch, decorative stitch, (safe) decorative trim like satin ribbon, etc.
NOTE: I would recommend stitching first, even if you just want to use basting stitches, and then doing a second stitch with your decorative trim, ribbon, etc.
That’s it; your pillowcase is complete!
