Today we have the perfect gift for anyone on your list that loves to travel, a jewelry roll! I also used it recently for hair ties and clips/bows for my daughter, and she felt so sophisticated using it.
SUPPLIES:
- 1/2 yard main fabric
- 1/2 yard lining fabric
- Batting
- 2″ bias tape OR make your own
- Scraps of clear vinyl
- Three 7″ zippers
- Scraps for binding bottom edges of vinyl (or can use 1.5″ binding tape)
- OPTIONAL: Ribbon or fold-over elastic instead of fabric ties
LET’S GET STARTED!
1/2″ seam allowances included.
Step 1: PREPPING
Go grab the pattern here! The pattern is 100% free, but you do need to add it to your cart and checkout. Then, it will always be available to download from your account. The pattern is a no-trim pattern; if you need help putting the pattern together, pop over to the faqs and troubleshooting page or ask in our Facebook group .
Print and assemble the pattern. Alternatively, you can use the projector file if you’re using a projector. Pattern layout below:
The main is curved, but if you prefer measurements, you can curve the corners of the main piece.
Main cut 1 outer fabric, cut 1 liner fabric, cut 1 interfacing, cut 1 batting: 8.5″ x 16″
Small pocket cut 2 in clear vinyl: 8.5″ x 2″
Large pocket cut 2 in clear vinyl: 8.5″ x 3″
Binding cut 1 on bias: 48″ x 2″
If you decided to create your own binding, you’ll want to prep that now. We have a great blog post here on making your own woven fabric binding.
Step 2: CONSTRUCT ROLL
First, baste your batting to the wrong side of your lining fabric.
Press lining in to quarters to create memory presses; this will divide the lining to determine where each pocket will go. This is important so that when you fold/roll the jewelry roll up, your jewelry doesn’t get damaged in the folds.
Step 3: CONSTRUCT POCKETS
Set batting/lining pieces to the side. Prep binding of rate bottom edges of each piece of clear vinyl (four total). After you have all four binding pieces prepped, prep your binding piece for the top open pocket piece (no zipper). I used 2″ for the top piece, and 1.5″ for the bottom binding pieces for a bit narrower finish.
NOTE: If you wish to use fabric instead of clear vinyl for your pockets, you can still do binding on the bottom raw edges.
Pin or clip binding to raw edge of clear vinyl. This is the top pocket piece with no zipper, so there is binding on top and bottom. The top binding piece is slightly wider.
Pin or clip remaining bottom binding pieces.
Stitch each piece along the first fold line. Repeat for the bottom raw edge of all vinyl pieces.
Trim seam allowance if desired. Fold binding toward middle, and fold again to enclose raw edges.
Repeat for all pocket binding pieces.
Stitch closed.
Next, we’ll attach zippers to the top of three clear vinyl pieces.
NOTE: If you want to add binding to the top raw edge of the zipper, you can do that as well; for this tutorial, we’re just leaving it raw!
NOTE: For the bottom portion of the zipper tape, we are going to pin the zipper to the back of the vinyl. If you’re using regular woven fabric for your pockets instead, you’ll want to pin the zipper to the RIGHT side of your pocket, then flip and topstitch.
Pin zipper to the back side of clear vinyl.
Repeat for all zippered pockets. Stitch as close to zipper teeth as possible, but ensure zipper can still open and close.
Space pockets out on lining. Pin pockets in place along binding edge, and top zipper tape edge for each pocket. Do not sew the top pocket closed.
Leave top of unzippered pocket open.
Stitch in place. You can also place stitches vertically through the pockets, to create smaller sections; just be sure not to sew all the way through the zipper teeth.
Step 4: STRAPS and BINDING
On each strap, fold one short raw edge in toward the wrong side by 1/4″. Stitch all the way around each strap.
To attach the straps, take your strap binding pieces or ribbon, elastic, etc. and pin to the top raw edge of the main jewelry roll piece. Baste in place.
With wrong sides together, place the main fabric together with the lining side.
Pin or clip together along the outer edges. Be sure not to catch the straps. Baste together.
Fold/press binding raw edge back by 1/4″, toward the wrong side, to ensure a clean finish. Pin or clip binding in place along whole outer edge.
Be sure that the straps are sandwiched between the main fabric and outer binding. The raw edges of the straps should be at the top center back of the jewelry roll. Be sure not to catch the straps in the binding elsewhere.
Stitch binding with 1/2″ seam allowance. Trim seam allowance if desired.
Refold binding all along outer edge. Stitch as close to the edge as possible.
Your jewelry roll is all done! Now you’re ready to fill it with your favorite accessories for your next trip, or get it ready for gifting!

Thanks so much for the free pattern. Could you be able to provide the dimensions/height and width of each piece. Rather than printing out a paper pattern, I would prefer to measure and cut my fabric. Thanks for your consideration.

When attaching the zippers to vinyl, why do you sew the zipper tape to the underneath part of the vinyl, but when sewing fabric pockets, why sew the bottom zipper tape differently and flip flip upwards for the topstitch? Can you do the latter with the vinyl too to make it look more finished?

Hi! You definitely can do it that way if you’d like 🙂
